Retinal Photocoagulation
Retinal rupture
The retina is the internal lining of the eye; it is a thin, light-sensitive fabric that generates vision. Any breakdown in this lining may ensue retinal detachment and sequentially vision loss
Retinal Rupture Symptoms
A patient with an acute retinal tear may experience the sudden onset of black spots or “floaters” in the affected eye.
In this case, the patient should not shake his head under any circumstances as the rupture in the retina may increase. Try to get to the hospital as soon as possible.
Retina Rupture Treatment :
- Laser surgery (photocoagulation) – During this procedure, a laser is used to make small burns around the retinal tear.
- Freezing treatment (cryopexy) – A special freezing probe is applied to the sclera (white part of the eye); freezing the retina around the retinal tear.
takes place by using the laser to create a microscopic burn in the target tissue. The laser spots are usually applied in 1 of 3 patterns.
Before the procedure, you will be given eye drops to dilate your pupils. Rarely, you will receive a shot of a local anesthetic. The shot may be unpleasant. You will be awake and painless during the procedure.
You will be seated with your chin in a chin rest. A special lens will be Reflected into your eye. The lens acts as mirror that help the surgeon aim the laser. You will be instructed to look straight forward or at a target light with your other eye.
The doctor will aim the laser at the area of the retina. With every pulse of the laser, you will see a flash of light. Depending on the condition being treated, there may just be a few pulses, or as many as 500.
cryopexy eye surgery
Retinal cryopexy, sometimes known as retinal cryotherapy, is a non-invasive procedure that utilizes intense cold to freeze portions of the retina (the light sensitive tissue at the back of the critical eye to vision). The freezing damages the tissues to promote the formation of a scar.
The cost of both photocoagulation and Cryopexy surgery in Iran about 1400 $ to 1600 $.
Laser Retina Risks :
In most cases Retinal laser surgery is a safe procedure with virtually no restrictions and minimum risks and side effects. Some patients may experience blurring or a decrease in peripheral and night vision, but these effects are usually temporary and go away on their own after a few weeks or months.
However, some of these risks include retinal detachment, fluid buildup, growth of new blood vessels, infection and further bleeding into the vitreous gel.
Preparing for your Retina Laser Surgery:
- Be informed of any pre-appointment restrictions. At the time you make the appointment, ask if you need to do something in advance.
- List any symptoms you’re experiencing, including those that seem unrelated to the reason why you scheduled the appointment.
- List key personal information, including major stresses and recent life changes.
- List all medications, vitamins and supplements you’re taking, including doses.
- Ask a family member or friend to accompany
- you. You may wish to ask anyone who could drive you home.
Retina Laser Surgery Recovery Time :
those who have recently undergone laser surgery for a retinal tear or detachment, the healing process can take anywhere from one week to four weeks. It normally takes a full week for the laser treatment to completely seal the tear and prevent detachment.
You can also find the information you need about the do’s and don’ts during the recovery period in the table below:
Recommended | Not Recommended for One Months | Forbidden |
Sleeping on Your Back | Driving( Until your vision is Restored ) | quick head movements |
Eat Regularly | strenuous activity | Lifting heavy objects |
place a cold pack on your eye for 20 minutes | Exercise and Sport | Rubbing the eyes |
Use Sunglasses | Flying with airplane (Atmospheric pressure can rupture the retina again ) | Blow to the eye |
Take time off duty | gardening | |
Use eye drops given to you | cleaning |
